Forgiveness is true fragrance

Rajeev Verma

Forgiveness is that bright aspect of a person’s character whose radiance does not fade even in the hardest of circumstances. It is a power that lightens the heart, deepens relationships, and simplifies life. It is truly said, “Forgiveness is like those flowers that do not stop giving fragrance even after being crushed.” This line not only carries depth but beautifully defines one of the most important qualities of human life.

When flowers bloom, they become the adornment of nature. Their fragrance, beauty, and softness bring joy to the world. But even if they are trampled, they do not lose their scent. The same applies to forgiveness in life. When we are hurt, insulted, betrayed, or emotionally wounded by someone, our immediate reaction is often to retaliate. But forgiveness means rising above that reaction—understanding the pain without allowing bitterness to take root.

Forgiveness is a symbol of inner strength. It is not weakness; rather, it is the greatest form of strength. Anger, resentment, or the desire for revenge slowly hollow a person from within. Anger burns outward but destroys inward. Forgiveness, on the other hand, does not burn—it soothes, like a cool breeze in scorching heat. It lightens emotional burdens and helps a person return to their true nature—love, empathy, and compassion.

Many times in life, people fail to meet our expectations. Friends betray, family hurts, and workplace situations bring humiliation. In such situations, forgiveness becomes the lamp that continues to glow even in darkness. A forgiving person develops deep maturity. They realize: Why sacrifice one’s peace over someone else’s mistake? Why carry bitterness in the heart?

Forgiveness does not mean forgetting everything or accepting wrong as right. It means freeing the mind—from the pain, the person, or the incident that is disturbing your peace. When we forgive, the first person we set free is ourselves. It is the cleansing of the soul, the purification of the mind, and the purification of emotions.

In human relationships, forgiveness plays an extremely important role. Relationships do not break because of mistakes—they break because of our inability to forgive. No human is perfect; everyone makes mistakes. If we turn every mistake into a stone on our heart, life will become heavy and painful. A small act of forgiveness breathes new life into relationships. It reduces distances between hearts, revives love, and gives a chance for a fresh beginning.

The lives of great personalities offer countless examples of forgiveness. Mahatma Gandhi said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is an attribute of the strong.” That is why forgiveness makes a person great not externally, but internally.

In the end, remember: forgiveness is not just a gift to others—it is one of the most beautiful gifts you give yourself. Just as a flower does not abandon its fragrance even when crushed, we too must not let our nature, goodness, and humanity change because of someone else’s behavior. Peace resides where forgiveness resides. The sooner we let go of anger, bitterness, and thoughts of revenge, the more beautiful, free, and fragrant life becomes.

Forgiveness is truly that fragrance which connects a person to inner divinity.
